ABOUT ME

Hi, I’m Denise Pimentel, born and raised in that unforgettable New York State of Mind — specifically Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. I now live in the suburbs of New Jersey, but as the saying goes, you can take the girl out of New York, but you can’t take the New York out of the girl.

I’m a writer, educator, and visual artist. My work is often described as witty, raw, and honest, balancing depth with clarity. Much of my recent writing centers on faith and resilience, particularly the transformative power of God to bring light and restoration out of profound suffering.

In addition to writing, I create visual art through painting, sketching, and pyrography. I’m deeply inspired by the Renaissance — a period where art, philosophy, and faith reshaped the world — and that influence continues to inform both my creative and intellectual work.

I’ve been writing since elementary school, and I recently completed my memoir, Unshaken: A True Story of a Bleeding Mind, Broken Body, and Buried Grief, an eight-year project shaped by lived experience. The book explores my journey through bipolar disorder, stroke recovery, motherhood, and ultimately, unshakable faith.

Teaching and motherhood occupied much of my professional life for many years. In late 2024, a life-altering stroke required me to step away from the classroom. During recovery, I was given the time and clarity to complete Unshaken. Having completed the publication of my memoir, I am now composing a 30-day devotional companion designed to support others navigating similar challenges.

Writing is how I process, reflect, and connect. It allows me to teach, heal, and engage honestly with the world. I hold a B.A. in Elementary Education and History and an M.A. in Liberal Studies with a concentration in American Studies from Kean University. My graduate thesis focused on women who served in the Vietnam War — a reminder that overlooked voices matter.

Outside of writing, I continue to create art and pursue goals that were once placed on hold. Although plans to sell my artwork at the Somerville Street Fair were interrupted by the pandemic years ago, I have shared and sold many pieces on social media since then. Life may shift, but purpose and creativity endure.

I have also recently started my Unshaken Voices podcast on the platform PodBean. A podcast for anyone who’s been through the storm and is still standing. It will be geared toward believers, caregivers, and fighters living through the realities of bipolar disorder, stroke recovery, grief, and spiritual resilience.

Each week, there will be raw, hope-filled conversations about trauma, mental health, caregiving, and God’s grace. Whether you’re navigating your own diagnosis or walking alongside someone you love, you’ll find faith, healing, and solidarity there.

Unshaken is available in print, ebook, and audiobook formats, with the audiobook narrated by me for readers who prefer or benefit from listening. A cinematic book trailer has also been released, along with themed merchandise designed to amplify the book’s broader message of hope.

Proceeds from Unshaken are shared with organizations NAMI (the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization) and Overlook Medical Center (the hospital that had carried me through almost two decades of treatment), because this work is not just personal — it is mission-driven.
